Storyline of The Order (2024):
The Order (2024) is a Canadian crime thriller directed by Justin Kurzel, based on the 1989 non-fiction book The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt. The film explores the rise and fall of a white supremacist terrorist group in the 1980s United States.
Plot Summary:
Set in 1983, the story begins with a series of bold bank robberies and armored car heists across the Pacific Northwest, instilling fear in local communities. FBI agent Terry Husk, portrayed by Jude Law, transfers to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, seeking a quieter assignment after years of investigating groups like the Ku Klux Klan and Cosa Nostra. However, he soon becomes entangled in a complex case involving domestic terrorism.
Husk teams up with local deputy Jamie Bowen, played by Tye Sheridan, to investigate the crimes. Their inquiries lead them to Bob Mathews, depicted by Nicholas Hoult, the charismatic leader of a white supremacist group known as “The Order.” Mathews and his followers aim to overthrow the federal government and establish a white homeland, financing their operations through violent robberies and bombings.
As Husk delves deeper, he uncovers the group’s plan to incite a race war, inspired by the extremist novel The Turner Diaries. The investigation intensifies following the assassination of Jewish talk radio host Alan Berg, portrayed by Marc Maron, a crime that shocks the nation.
The climax unfolds on Whidbey Island, Washington, where Husk and fellow FBI agent Joanne Carney, played by Jurnee Smollett, lead a raid on Mathews’ safe house. The standoff culminates in a fiery confrontation, resulting in Mathews’ death and the dismantling of “The Order.”
The Order delves into themes of extremism, loyalty, and the personal costs of pursuing justice, offering a gripping portrayal of a turbulent period in American history.
