The Storyteller (2022) – Storyline
Tarini Bandyopadhyay, a 60-year-old retired Bengali man, has spent his life hopping between different jobs, never truly settling into one career. But there’s one thing he excels at—storytelling. His mind is a treasure trove of fascinating tales, but he has never published a single story, believing that stories should be told, not sold.
One day, a wealthy businessman from Ahmedabad, Ratan Garodia, hires Tarini for a peculiar job. With chronic insomnia, Ratan wants Tarini to narrate bedtime stories to help him sleep. Intrigued by the offer, Tarini accepts and moves to Ahmedabad. Each night, he spins captivating tales, bringing a sense of warmth and nostalgia into Ratan’s life.
As time passes, Tarini begins to notice Ratan’s unusual behaviour. He soon discovers that Ratan has secretly published Tarini’s stories under a pseudonym, gaining fame as a writer. Tarini feels betrayed but chooses not to confront Ratan immediately. Instead, he decides to teach him a lesson in his own creative way.
Tarini starts narrating stories from Rabindranath Tagore’s works, knowing that Ratan is unfamiliar with them. Unaware of the trick, Ratan continues publishing them under his name. Soon, the Rabindranath Tagore Foundation notices the plagiarism and takes legal action against Ratan. Facing a major lawsuit and a hefty fine, Ratan is forced to confront the truth—his success was built on someone else’s talent.
In the end, both men walk away with valuable lessons. Realizing the power of his words, Tarini finally starts writing and publishing his stories under his own name. Humbled by the experience, Ratan learns to respect the art of storytelling and those who create it.
