Vettaiyan (2024) – Storyline
“Vettaiyan” is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language action drama film directed by T. J. Gnanavel. The film stars Rajinikanth as Athiyan, a Superintendent of Police in Kanyakumari district, renowned for his encounter operations against criminals. His team includes “Battery” Patrick, a former thief turned tech-savvy police informer.
The narrative begins with Saranya, a middle-school teacher from Pechipaarai, reporting to Athiyan about marijuana being stored in classrooms, leading to student drug abuse. Acting on her tip, Athiyan’s team arrests Kumaresan, the mastermind behind the drug operations, and eliminates him in an encounter, garnering public approval but attracting scrutiny from the human rights commission.
Saranya is later transferred to Chennai, where she is brutally raped and murdered on the terrace of her new school, with her body discovered in the water tank. The investigation, led by SP Harish Kumar and ASP Roopa Kiran, points to Guna, a software engineer and brother of Saranya’s student Chitra, as the prime suspect due to his alleged addiction to pornography. Guna escapes custody but is eventually tracked down and killed by Athiyan in an encounter at sea. However, Justice Sathyadev reveals that Guna was in Hyderabad during the crime, proving his innocence.
Devastated by his mistake, Athiyan reopens the case with his team, uncovering gaps in the original investigation. Their efforts lead them to Hanu Reddy, a contract killer hired to murder Saranya. Further investigations reveal that Natraj Shanmugam, Chairman of Nat Academy, orchestrated the crime to cover up a scam involving fraudulent online courses. Saranya and Guna had uncovered evidence of this scam before their deaths.
Athiyan attempts to arrest Natraj but faces retaliation, including his transfer to the Economic Offences Wing. Collaborating with DSP Nazeema, Athiyan gathers evidence against Nat Academy’s fraudulent activities. Despite facing threats and the loss of his ally Patrick, Athiyan exposes Natraj’s scams and clears Guna’s name. The government annuls all agreements with Nat Academy, leading to its ban. Natraj attempts to escape custody but is subdued by Athiyan and sentenced to life in prison. Athiyan decides to step back from his encounter-driven methods, choosing to let justice take its course.
“Vettaiyan” was released theatrically on 10 October 2024, coinciding with Vijayadashami. The post-theatrical streaming rights were acquired by Amazon Prime Video, and the film began streaming there from 8 November 2024 in Tamil and dubbed versions in Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada.
